How to edit a PDF on Android

Android handles PDFs well enough to read them, but doing anything structural — merging, splitting, editing — normally sends you to the Play Store for an app that wants storage permissions and a subscription, or to a website that uploads your document to a server. Doing it in the browser skips the install and keeps the file on your phone.

Step by step on Android

  1. 1Open the Edit PDF tool and upload your PDF.
  2. 2Pick a tool from the toolbar — Text, Whiteout, Highlight or Image — and click on the page to place it.
  3. 3Drag to position, use the corner handle to resize, and use the side panel to change the font, size or color of text.
  4. 4To replace existing words: cover them with a Whiteout box, then place Text on top.
  5. 5Click “Apply & download” — your edits become a permanent part of the PDF.

Tapping the file button opens Android's document picker, which reaches internal storage, the SD card, Google Drive and Downloads. Pick your PDF from whichever of those it lives in.

Where the finished file is saved on Android

Chrome puts finished files in your Downloads folder, reachable from the Files (or My Files) app and from Chrome's own Downloads screen. A notification appears the moment the file is saved — tap it to open or share.

What Android can’t do on its own

Android's built-in PDF viewer is read-only. There's no stock way to combine documents, delete pages or add text, which is why the Play Store is full of apps charging for exactly that.
